Despite a long and proud history that can be traced to 10th century Kyivan Rus’, Ukraine’s claim to statehood and nationhood has often been challenged. Vladimir Putin’s claim that Ukraine is not a legitimate state is a central part of his justification for the invasion of Ukraine. This section includes scholarship that tells the story of Ukraine and corrects misunderstandings.
